Why does the water heater making pop noises

My does my water heater make pop noises?

If your water heater is making a whining noise, a popping noise, or something else you don’t quite recognize, it may be time to call in a plumber. Your water heater tank has sediment/scale build up (minerals from hard water) too much sediment can cause the water heater to overheat, damage the inner lining and weaken the steel tank, leading to a leak. It is time to drain and flush the tank.

The noise comes from water that is boiling underneath the sediment, which is harmless but can cause a leak if it gets too hot or the tank gets too weak, which can cause it to burn out.
